How to Beat Buakaw?

Many people want Buakaw and me to fight.

Unfortunately, since we are very good friends, that's not going to happen.

But if it were to... here's how I would fight him.

The sparring below is full of silly and hilarious moments, but there are also some of my serious tactics.

Buakaw is many weight classes above me and very experienced, so to beat him, I have to use a lot of fight IQ.

I was joking in the video when I teeped him as he was doing the Wai Kru, but in a real fight, I would actually try to get him angry.

This is because I want him to charge at me early and start throwing his best shots.

In this sparring, he pressed forward right away and didn't throw anything. Instead, it was me who threw a lot of shots.

In a real fight, I wouldn't do this. I wouldn't try to score so many points early and gas myself out like this.

Instead, I want him to throw as much as possible, especially with his best shots, so that his energy drops throughout the fight.

I fired about 20 shots before he started attacking back. In a real fight, I would want him to be firing more shots in the beginning, and to let him miss often.

In the sparring, he did a lot of weird stuff and threw me off my game. Especially that teep to the mouth...

In a real fight between us, that's what I'd be trying to do to him.

In fact, that's what I've done to so many of my much bigger opponents. I would use anger to my advantage, whether it's making them angry or making them think that I'm angry.

I would also use my antics and showmanship to get my opponents very flustered.

Ideally, if I can do the same to  Buakaw... and he starts charging in, I would time a big head kick, which you saw me land multiple times in this spar.

I didn't do it here, but I would need to stay away from corners and the ropes... if I go there, I must fire back immediately and circle out.

Getting stuck on the ropes against a bigger opponent is not a good idea, unless you're looking to drain their energy and time a big knockout.

I would also stay away from exchanging shots with him, and instead use footwork to circle around him and my speed to go in and out.

Buakaw is much bigger and stronger than me, but my feet moves much faster than his.

This would allow me to avoid extended clinching time.

Doing things to get him flustered and then exhausting himself would allow me to do my best work in the later rounds.

If he gets too aggressive, I would be able to land power counter strikes... which has a chance of KO.

This is how I've beaten opponents who are 30 CM taller than me and 40 pounds heavier.

The techniques and tactics I use are different in each fight... but it's all from one system, the "Saenchai Style Muay Thai" system.
